Indubitably, Uzbekistan is the heart of Central Asia. Over the millennia it has inherited a mystical and ancient history that will enthrall everyone. While this country has been independent since 1991, the bulk of its history stretches back to the days when caravans traversed along the Great Silk Road, and legendary armies led by Alexander the Great, Genghis Khan, and Tamerlane staked their claims to immortality. More recently, the Soviet Union left its imprint that gives you a healthy dose of history wrapped into one tour. Actually, you may want to consider multiple tours since there really is that much to see and do! Just make sure that you have enough time on your visa to make all of your visits. Five Stans Adventure is the perfect choice among many agencies to make your experience during your trips the best!

If you’re anyone like me, I immediately was enamored with the rich and diverse culture of Uzbekistan – but this was only through the books and travel guides I was reading, and the maps I was studying. It wasn’t until I finally visited the ancient cities of Bukhara, Samarkand, and Khiva that all of the pieces came together. These trips allowed me to see the majesty of the architecture that was beyond comprehension, especially when I thought about the amount of time it took to plan and build these wondrous markers of human achievement. Also, I dwelled on a few moments of regret when thoughts turned to the total destruction that Genghis Khan and his armies wrought on these cities. For the most part, we are left only with the words of the words of the Persian poets and writers of that era. What I would do to have the opportunity to transport myself back into time to walk the streets and roam the bazaars – a time-travel tours, if you will! Or better yet, to travel between Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva to appreciate the work of the caravans and the people who operated the caravanserais that were strategically placed throughout the Great Silk Road. What a dynamic time to be alive as people exchanged goods, philosophies, religions, news, politics, and the latest technologies! Do you think there was a Five Stans Adventure back then working as the best of all agencies available?

Today, Five Stans Adventure is the best of many agencies that can bring you as close as humanely possible to experience sensually what life was like along the Great Silk Road in those days through one of our many tours. Many of the architectural treasures are alive and well and ready for your enjoyment! Samarkand, where some have argued that the city was founded as far back as the 8th century B.C., possesses a lion’s share of architectural wonders that will leave you in a state of utter amazement. Much has been written about them and photographed as well, but the real joy comes from seeing them for yourself. The first that comes to mind is the Registan, which many consider the pearl of the Great Silk Road. I can recall the times when I visited it that I would spend hours wandering around, wandering inside, wandering outside, and looking upside down on a hot summer’s day. These hours gave me the opportunity to truly appreciate the thought, planning, sweat, toil, and death that it took to build the Registan. And thanks to the assistance of my Five Stans Adventure guide, I was able to gain access to places that most people couldn’t reach not only in Samarkand, but in other cities during my tours. Equally important, he knew the optimal times to photograph it based upon the sun’s position in the sky. It was truly one of the most magical experiences of my life and I don’t know if anything can replace it.

Nothing can compare to the magic of Bukhara! For many years it was the center of Islamic scholars which was a direct result to the economic success of the Great Silk Road. While their legacies will live on, we have the tangible results of their importance through the architecture that is alive today. To simply close your eyes and imagine that you’re walking the same footpaths as Avicenna (physician and philosopher), al-Bukhari (Islamic scholar and compiler of hadiths), and Ayni (writer, poet). is enough to connect yourself to the city’s effervescent past. Bukhara is also famous for its community of Bukharan Jews, where remnants of it remain to this day. Many times during my years in Uzbekistan I would wander among the crowded streets of the old town to capture the dynamism of once was, whether it was in the early morning as the sun rose or into the evening as the sun retreated under the horizon. I encourage you to have a rest at the base of the Kalyon Minor and let the history of the tower envelop you. I can almost see Genghis Khan riding his horse to it and being transfixed by it much like many other people have over the centuries. He was so overwhelmed that he permitted it to remain standing, unlike the rest of the city which he ordered to be demolished, as flat your hand.

Like every other city along the Great Silk Road that Genghis Khan encountered, Khiva was flattened, too. If your name is Genghis Khan, you don’t need a visa. Therefore, much of this city’s architecture is considered to be “new” although most of it was built in 19th century, although some date back to the 16th century. The Old City, or Itchan Kala, is considered to be the world’s most beautiful outdoor museum. The architecture is packed into a relatively small area which makes it easily accessible to conduct a walking tour. There are ample opportunities to climb the various minarets such as the Kalta Minor and Islam Khodja Minaret.

Samarkand, Bukhara, and Khiva are loaded with much more for the traveller to enjoy. Bring your list of things you want to see! We want to ensure that you visit all of the UNESCO World Heritage Center’s sites in Uzbekistan and everything in-between. Among the most cherished memories you will bring back with you are not the souvenirs, photographs, and videos, but of the friends you will make. During your tours you will meet the friendliest people on the planet. It’s amazing the kindness, respect, and hospitality they will show during your trips. Uzbeks and Tajiks will be among the most prominent people you’ll meet, but be prepared to me Kyrgyz, Kazakhs, and Turkmen people, too. Your experiences in Uzbekistan will remind you of the goodness that can be found in the world.
